Hi Banklady,
I am glad to have come across your site which clearly explains Discover Card’s 10% grocery bonus. I just got off the phone with Discover Card after a long debate on the accuracy of my bonus summary. Another hidden information (not even in the fine print!) I thought I’d share.
In short, I made $95.57 of qualified grocery purchase last billing period, but I only got $2.96 (~3%) as special grocery bonus rather than $3.82 (4%). The very confident customer rep I spoke to insisted that the summary is correct; he said just to add the $2.96 with $0.85 (“purchase award this period”) then I get my $3.81 (roughly 4%). I kept explaining to him that I earned the $0.85 with all purchases this month ($169.3 x 0.5% = $0.85) (2nd tier), and the grocery purchases should get 4% on their own. I got nowhere with him. Finally I spoke to another rep who explained that the bonus award will not be calculated until after the end of the program. I doubt they’ll correct the error but I took his word for it, for now.
I realize how much time I’ve wasted arguing over a dollar with Discover Card, but it is really that I hate to be cheated after having read the fine print very very carefully. I thought my story could alert others enrolled in the program who expect to get up to 5% of bonus- they should always doubt check their summaries and never trust that Discover Card would do the right thing automatically.
Thank you for reading my rants.
Regards,
Discover Card Consumer
