Cash Settlements including Computer Monitor Owners, Sprint Wireless, Canon Printers
Who hasn’t purchased a computer monitor? If you purchased a pool diving board or frozen waffles you could also be eligible to claim some free money from some of the latest settlements.
Check to see if any of these companies owe you money:
1. Computer Monitor (CRT Antitrust – No Receipt Needed to File)
If you purchased a cathode ray tube (CRT) product such as a television or computer monitor between March 1, 1995 and Nov. 25, 2007, you can submit a claim for a cash payment from a class-action settlement. Only consumers who purchased the CRT products in one of 21 states are eligible for payment, so check it out now to see if you’re eligible. You don’t need receipts but you may be asked to provide proof of purchase at a later date. Claimants will likely receive a minimum cash payment of $25 and possibly more. The deadline to file a claim is Dec. 7, 2015. Find out more at crtclaims.com/FileClaim.htm.
2. Van’s (No Receipt Needed to File)
Van’s breakfast products joins many others who make claims on their labeled foods as “all natural”. You may be eligible for compensation from a class-action settlement alleging these so-called natural products actually contained artificial or synthetic ingredients. The settlement applies to a number of Van’s frozen breakfast products, including frozen waffles, pancakes, French toast sticks, waffle sticks, English muffins and muffin crowns. You could claim up to $18 per household but must file before Dec. 16, 2015.
Tier 1: Class Members who fill out the Claim Form and who do not have valid proof of purchase may recover up to a maximum of $4.99 per household. This covers about 1.5 Van’s products.
Tier 2: Class Members who fill out the Claim Form and who do not have valid proof of purchase may recover $3.33 per unit up to a maximum of $9.99 per household (the cost of about 3 Van’s products), if they provide additional information about their purchases. Class Members who file a Tier 2 Claim must provide the following information:
The store(s) at which the Van’s product(s) were purchased;
The location (city and state) of purchase;
Approximate date (month and year) of purchase;
Type of Van’s product(s) purchased;
Approximate number of units purchased; and
The reason(s) the Class Member chose to purchase the product(s).
Tier 3: Class Members who fill out the claim form and who provide valid proof of purchase may recover the amount for which a valid proof of purchase has been provided, up to $18 per household.
File the claim here: milorosettlement.com/claim.
3. Sprint
If you’re a current or former Sprint customer who paid for unauthorized third-party premium SMS services such as ringtones, wallpapers and text message subscriptions to receive celebrity gossip and horoscopes, you can apply for a refund. Although you may have already received a refund so make sure to doublecheck. If you’re a postpaid customer, you’re eligible for full refunds of unauthorized charges, and if you’re a prepaid customer, you can get a one-time refund of $7. You have until Dec. 31, 2015 to sign up here at SprintRefundPSMS.com.
4. Swimming Pool Companies
Apparently there was a price-fixing conspiracy in the swimming pool products industry involving some of the main players such as
Pentair Water Pool & Spa Inc., Hayward Industries Inc. and Zodiac Pool Systems Inc. They agreed to a class-action settlement that will provide benefits to consumers who purchased pool products such as chemicals, cleaners, filters, diving boards, heaters, pumps and pool liners. The amount each claimant will receive depends on a number of factors, including the type of pool products purchased and the number of claims that are filed by Dec. 11, 2015. Learn more at PoolProductsConsumerLawsuit.com.
5. California Hotels
If you were in California and spoke to a representative of an 800-number at the Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Priority Club Rewards, Crowne Plaza Hotels and Resorts, Intercontinental Hotels and Resorts, Staybridge Suites, Candlewood Suites and Hotel Indigo you could qualify for a settlement. This must have been between March 1, 2011 and July 18, 2012 to receive a maximum of $5,000.
Allegedly consumers who placed toll-free calls to inquire about hotel rates and reservations may have had their calls recorded without their knowledge or consent, in violation of California law. Eligible claimants will likely receive $100 from the settlement up to $5,000 depending on the number of claims filed by Dec. 14, 2015.
6. Canon
Have you purchased a Canon printer that has an error message come up after the warranty expires? The “UO52 — Print Head Error” message to be exact and Canon supposedly refused to replace or repair the printer for free. According to the class-action lawsuit, it often cost more to repair the printer than to just buy a new one so customers can choose between a cash payment of up to $50 or a voucher valued at up to $75. You must file a claim before Dec. 7, 2015. Head over to canoninkjetprintersettlement.worldsecuresystems.com to file a claim.
Most PPO plans no longer available for 2016
As the health insurance enrollment season opens this week you may see big changes in your plan if any plan at all. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, Oklahoma, Illinois, and possibly other cities are all discontinuing all PPO plans for individuals and families at the beginning of the year. In Texas alone it will affect around 367,000 people statewide. The company claims it paid out $400 million more in claims than it collected in premiums for its Blue Choice PPO product in 2014, the first year of open enrollment.
To add more salt to the wound the competitor Humana will no longer will sell any PPOs on HealthCare.gov, the only place where shoppers can get tax credits for individual or family coverage. The company said the change was necessary to preserve the “affordability and access” of its other health plans.
Some Blue Cross HMOs such as the Blue Advantage Plus plans will feature an added benefit in 2016 that allows some coverage if a policyholder goes out of network. Consumers will pay a higher premium for these HMOs and a policyholder going out of network still could be responsible for up to 50 percent of the costs after the deductible has been paid. This will cripple patients with HIV or Cancer who have highly expensive medications such as Truvada from Gilead. PPO plans give you flexibility where you don’t need a primary care physician and you can go to any health care professional you want without a referral—inside or outside of your network.
Blue Cross said it will automatically switch members enrolled in the broad PPO to the Blue Choice plan. Although one big difference.is that for example in Illionois the broad PPO included every hospital (209) and the Blue Choice’s network had 78 hospitals this year. Blue Choice left out some prominent Chicago-area hospitals, like Northwestern Memorial, University of Chicago Medicine, Rush University Medical Center, the Advocate Health Care system and the North Shore University HealthSystem.

Give Stocks or Create Registry for Christmas, Birthday, Wedding, or Graduation
We have spoken about various investment apps lately but not about giving and receiving stocks from friends and family. While people have done this for years to make some of the most rewarding gifts for someone’s future a new platform makes it much easier. SparkGift lets you give stocks and index funds to your friends and family.
You can gift stocks and index funds, including fractional shares, ranging from $20 to $2,000 in as long as it takes to fill up a cup of coffee. This works similar to purchasing a gift card where you select your stock or index funds and send it to your recipient who redeems the gift for their stock held by SparkGift.
The recipient of the investment pays no fees. SparkGift charges the sender a fee of $2.95 plus 3%. If you use SparkGift for this Christmas season they will charge only $2.95 for gifts of up to $100.

Americans putting less than $1,000 in savings – Too low for emergencies
In a few recent polls they found that 62% of Americans have less than $1,000 in their savings accounts and 21% don’t even have a savings account. Many financial experts state you need a lot more money in savings put away for emergencies and retirement. This low of an investment in savings will not cover an emergency and those that come up means people will have to rely on credit, friends and family, or even their retirement accounts.
People faced with an emergency say they would raise the money by reducing spending elsewhere (26%), borrowing from family and/or friends (16%) or using credit cards (12%). According to a U.S. Federal Reserve survey 57% said they’d used some or all of their savings in the Great Recession. The low interest on savings account rates also keeps people from saving.
Only 29% said they have savings above $1,000 with the most common balance of $10,000 or more. One survey said that 9% of people say they keep only enough money in their savings accounts to meet the minimum balance requirements and avoid fees. Bank minimum requirements can vary between $300 a month and $1,500 a month.

YouTube Work-From-Home Millionaires Ranked
Forbes published its first top ten list for YouTube‘s highest-earning stars. The income was based on pre-Tax income so judging from some of these countries they are in you may just split that in half. The point is they are doing quite well out of their parent’s homes, basements, and bedrooms working from home.
Forbes estimated the income from data Nielsen and IMDb data, as well as interviews with agents/managers, industry insiders and the YouTube stars themselves. The Revenue for YouTubers comes mostly from advertising through Google’s Adsense Network which shows ads on Youtube. Just like Television, radio or other forms of advertising the more subscribers and views a YouTube channel’s owners have, the more they can charge for the ads that are running. They can also plug their own product endorsements and make more money such as book deals and product placement in videos.

Stop Being Big Bank Slaves and Avoid Paying High ATM fees
Most of us rely on ATM Machines to get cash because not every business takes credit and debit cards. We also need cash to leave tips and it seems everyone wants a tip these days so that amounts to quite a bit. It’s recommended that you use credit cards most of the time for safety reasons and to really help avoid ATM charges if you pay them off each month. There are also other ways to avoid ATM charges that have been going up at over three times the rate of inflation each year.
The average ATM fee is now over $4.50. The cost of ATMs and the data networks are actually going down and less expensive for banks. So they have no excuse to be charging these fees and you would think to remain competitive they would drop them as a major benefit. That is one of the main reasons I have had my checking with E*Trade bank for several years now because of the unlimited ATM fee refunds. [Read more…]

Will Financial Doom Hit the U.S. Markets?
We recently received an email from a concerned family member who warned us about an impending financial doom. This relative knows we own lots of stocks and thought we should be warned. I looked into the video they sent us warning about the Shemitah which is set to occur this month. Mostly a conspiracy theory that the US is looking toward some kind of a financial meltdown a lot worse than the market drop you saw a few weeks ago.
Here is a summary of the video that speaks of the Financial Doom predicted in September 2015:
He notes a pattern of judgments at seven-year intervals stemmed from the shemitah which basically stands for “washing away of things” such as debt. The video went back on historical records on other shemitah years since 1900 where he had some notable findings but nothing groundbreaking.
